Pure blood Akhal Teke line, despite that it’s pedigree core is over the minimum number (1000 mares), it is still small in numbers and requires additional efforts to be saved. Those efforts are more then desirable specifically for this line due to the line’s rarity and uniqueness as far as exterior and interior qualities, plus adaptability.
As it is known, Turkmen did not have pedigree records and the history was simply passed from generation to generation. Nevertheless, desiring to use outstanding stallions a variety of mares were used, often having close inbreeding and sometime s incest. The line was saturated with blood of certain remarkable stallions, thus the line was formed ad-hoc. The first systematic recording of the breed was done by K.I. Gorelovim after first examination of the rare horses in the Asian region (1927-1928).
Yet at the end 19 century, famous hippology specialist Firsov, and later on at the beginning of 20-th century V.O. Vitt as the result of the in depth research and studying of historical and archeological sources it was concluded that Akhal Teke breed is the oldest, unique line that had a significant influence on the development in the world of horse breeding and truly should be considered the first pure blood line in the world. Even in England the pure blooded Turkmen stallions and mares without the pedigree were admitted into the General Logbook.
The support for genetic variety in Akhal Teke line is one of measures to ensure it’s preservation. Multi-line, branchy genealogic structure of the breed serves as a proof of that. At present, the breed has 18 genealogical lines and 39 mares’ families.
